      Becoming a volunteer crisis counselor at Response Crisis Center is one of the most rewarding ways you can contribute to the community. Many volunteer crisis counselors are pursuing careers in the mental health or other related fields. Some local colleges offer internship credit for your work as a crisis counselor. Others are people who are looking for something meaningful to do in their spare time. Some have been touched by suicide. Others just want to help people in distress.  Response Crisis Center needs your help to staff its 24-hour Crisis Hotline and its online Crisis Chat programs. To become a volunteer Crisis Counselor, please fill out the application here:  Qualifications Must be 18 years of age or older No prior experience in mental health required Basic computer competency required Fluent in English; Bilingual in other languages helpful but not required Attend and complete Part One and Part Two of training Able to commit to a weekly 4-hour shift for an entire calendar year Ability to travel to our location Due to the nature of our work, we encourage applicants who have experienced suicide firsthand or through a loved one to seek support first before applying.  Training The training is time-intensive because we want to make sure our counselors are ready when they are on the lines. At this time Crisis Counselors are expected to go through our training, which is comprised of two parts: 1)     Part One of our training is held off-site and consists of approximately 14 hours of presentations and skill building activities.  Part One of training is held on the Stony Brook University campus in the Student Activities Center building. Prospective volunteers complete one full weekend of training (both days are from 9 am-5 pm, with an hour for lunch). We are providing a choice of either September 14th & 15th or September 21st & 22nd.  Please note: Prospective counselors must only sign up for one weekend and must complete both days. 1)     Part Two trainings and workshops are held at the Response Crisis Center. Applicants will receive the address of the Response Crisis Center upon their acceptance into Part Two of the training. Part Two of our training lasts approximately 10 weeks and consists of being paired with an office trainer for one four-hour shift where you will receive “hands-on”, individual training on our phone and chat lines, as well as one evening skills development workshop per week. Part Two evening workshops are held on rotating Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday evenings from 6:30 to 8:30 pm. A schedule of these workshops will be provided in Part One of the training. Lastly, Part Two includes a two-day workshop called ASIST (Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training). ASIST is an evidence-based training model, developed by LivingWorks, and is complementary to our own suicide prevention training. New trainees are expected to take an ASIST workshop within 6 months of being accepted into Part Two. FAQs Are there minimum age requirements to apply as a counselor? Volunteers must be 18 years of age to apply.  Does my registration guarantee me a spot in the training?   Once you register for the event you will be prompted to complete an application.  Your registration is incomplete until that application is received and reviewed.   What are my transportation/parking options for getting to and from the event? You must provide your own transportation.  The actual location of the training will be disclosed upon verification of your application.  Free parking is available.    Must I attend a full weekend of training?   Yes.  Applicants must attend a full weekend of training for consideration.  Once one full weekend in Part 1 is complete and background information has been verified, you will be contacted to review next steps.    What is the dress code?  Please dress comfortably.    How can I contact the organizer with any questions?
