      Fashioned for the 21st Century

Founded in the basement of New Haven's St. Mary’s Church on Hillhouse Avenue 137 years ago, the Knights of Columbus has expended its presence as far as the Pacific Rim of Asia, but has always called the Elm City “home.” A Knights of Columbus Museum exhibit, “Fashioned for the 21st Century,” recounts each of the organization’s seven office locations in the city on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of its present headquarters building at the corner of Church Street and M.L.K. Jr. Boulevard. The iconic tower with its four tile-clad exterior columns was designed in modernist style by renowned architect Kevin Roche (1922-2019). Former New Haven Mayor Richard Lee, who led the city through many significant redevelopment projects during his 16-year tenure, described Roche’s structure at the time of its design as “fashioned for the 21st century.” The exhibit, which continues through June 14, 2020, is supplemented by archival documents, photographs and artifacts featuring statistics about all seven headquarters locations.
