The work of Carol Strock Wasson encompasses the genre of the rural area she lives in, focusing on color, shape and design in the plein air tradition as well as in the studio. Though she is known mainly for her work in pastels, she also works in oil, monotype prints and watercolor.
This exhibition is about the every-changing landscape, Wasson says. “I’ve been a plein air painter for many years. I've seen fence rows disappearing and barns falling apart, wildflower fields plowed under, all to make room for more production, more manufacturing. Yet the land survives. It morphs and adapts to become new and meets our needs.”
She says her typical process “begins with plein air, being outside, trying to capture the moment of light that inspired me to stop to paint. I may not remember where a place is but I will remember the light. My studio paintings are more about the composition and design of an idea about the landscape. Even in the studio, I continue to strive to capture the essence of light. I am always asking questions.”
This series begins with a question of whether she could paint the landscape with color and value only. It is a continuing series that Wasson believes will change as the landscape changes and as she changes and grows as a landscape painter. “The journey through the landscape is never ending,” she says.
