2019 Members Only Award Winners: Silas Breaux, Carlos Villarreal, Kylie Justus

Silas Breaux – Ain’t There No More:
Silas Breaux’s solo exhibition is a collection of personal observations regarding the relationship between the natural world and our built environments. The tension wherever the two realms intersect and how that fraught relationship is documented and remembered with the passage of time are of particular interest. Abstraction is used as a means of distilling this information and these ideas down to their most appealing aspects, much like we do when looking back at the relationship in question.

      Carlos Villareal - The Fruits:
Carlos Israel Villarreal is a Texas based Fine Art Photographer and Filmmaker. His work has appeared in Rolling Stone and on MTV and his films have been screened at SXSW and the Oaxaca Film Festival. ‘The Fruits’ investigates the intimate space of a South Texas minority family’s life within the context of this current American moment. In this series of images, Villarreal utilizes the space between cinematic and documentary photography in order to challenge notions of race, privilege and power. Through autobiography, symbolism, lighting, staging, performance and documentation he subtly reveals tensions inherent in the complex condition of the Mexican American experience.

      Kylie Justus – Shower Thoughts:
Kylie Justus was born in the Rockies, grew up in the midwest, and found her way to south Texas nearly two years ago. Currently, she works as a freelance designer and photographer in Corpus Christi. Inspired by the interesting and complex “drawings” that hair creates when stuck to a shower wall, Justus presents a series of prints on acrylic based upon hair samples from friends. “It's a collection of the things discarded, of women, of community, of people who make art every day and didn’t even suspect it.”
