Claremont Symphony's Finale Is Out of This World

      On Sunday, June 9, 3:30 p.m.

Closing its 66th Season, the Claremont Symphony Orchestra will take listeners from the Deep South all the way to outer space. Directed by Robert Sage, CSO will present a poignant song by Samuel Barber depicting childhood memories of life and death in Tennessee. Soprano soloist is Laura Sage, Music Director Robert Sage's daughter. The free concert will conclude with Gustav Holst's masterpiece The Planets.

Barber's Knoxville: Summer of 1915 is a lyric rhapsody based on excerpts from a short prose poem written by James Agee in which he described his childhood in Knoxville. The text does not tell a story; it is a poetic evocation of life as seen by a small boy. Ms. Sage has sung in numerous operas and is a sought-after church soloist. She is a frequent violinist with the Chattanooga Symphony and performs and produces operas and musical theater productions.

The Planets is a seven-movement orchestral suite, with each movement named after a planet and its corresponding astrological character as defined by Holst. He constructed the piece to provide maximum contrast between adjacent movements. For example, Mars with its warlike music is followed by Venus, which offers calm, peaceful melodies.

The free concert will be held at Bridges Hall of Music, Pomona College, 150 E. 4th Street, in Claremont. Handicapped parking is available in front of the hall, with a ramp for the handicapped on the west side of the hall. More information is available at, or call 909-596-5979.
